Reference Books

Assessment Method:

Class work (both presentation and essay) will account for 30% of the final grade. 
The written wid-term examination will account for a further 30%. 
An oral exam will provide the remaining 40%.



Students will be examined on what has been said and done in class, and on the texts and documents which will be made available to them in the professor’s website. Beside that, they will be examined on the following texts:

1) D. Diner, Cataclysms: A History of the Twentieth Century from Europe’s Edge, 2008

2) plus, one of the following:
N. Atkin, The Fifth French Republic, 2005
R. Gildea, France Since 1945, 2002
M. Fulbrook, A History of Germany, 1918-2000. The Divided Nation, 2011
P. O’Dochartaigh, Germany since 1945, 2004
D. Childs, Britain since 1945, Routledge, 2006
P. Clarke, Hope and Glory. Britain 1900-2000, Penguin, 2004
D. Marquand, Britain since 1918. The Strange Career of British Democracy, 2009

3) plus, one of the following readings:
G. Ferrero, The Principles of Power. The Great Political Crises of History, 1942
K. Polanyi, The Great Transformation. The political and economic origins of our time, 1944
L. von Mises, Omnipotent government. The Rise of the Total State and Total War, 1944
B. Croce, History of Europe in the nineteenth century, 1932
F. Furet, Interpreting the French Revolution, 1978
M. Oakeshott, The politics of faith and the politics of skepticism, 1996



— In the week of November 4 a written midterm exam will be held, concerning the book chosen among those of group 2. Those who cannot/will not take the midterm exam will be examined orally on the whole programme.

— Students are strongly suggested to participate in the classwork (presentation+essay). Those unable to participate must pick not one, but two books of group 2, regarding different countries.

— The book chosen among those of group 2 must concern a different country from that studied in class (presentation+essay).
