The course deals with intellectual property rights (particularly patents) as legal tools as well as leverages managers have over intangible resources of the firm. How companies are able to gain and retain a competitive advantage through the management of R&D’s results is explained. An economic explanation for the existence of intellectual property rights and an overview of types are also provided. Furthermore, the course will focus on quasi-vertical inter-firm arrangements for the use of intellectual property rights, such as licensing and cross-licensing and other forms of exploitation.
Due to technicalities and substantial novelty of the topics, attendance of classes is strongly recommended.
